Whopper tadpole and Double Dogwood
We went up to The Rock Ranch today and Rosemary took her net. She caught this enormous bullfrog tadpole and she was absolutely beside herself with excitement.
I wish that I had taken my camera as the camera on my phone doesn't take great photos. This will give you idea of the size of this monster tadpole, though. We also caught dragonfly nymphs, lots of other tadpoles and a small painted turtle. A fun afternoon!

At the end of the driveway is a dogwood tree and we noticed it was different from the others. After a quick look we saw the flowers were all double. It is quite beautiful.
Last week Rosemary caught this nice bass after a day of great patience.

Bear Hunt 2008
Kevin and the girls went out to look for bear cubs again this year and after a long day they found two at Ocmulgee Wildlife Management area, a male and a female. They were a bit older than the cubs we found last year at Oaky Woods WMA. These were about 5 weeks old, their eyes were open and they were crawling about. Their claws are amazingly sharp and Isabelle was scratched on the arm- she was very proud of where the "bear scratched her" and has been showing it to everyone.
Checking my hive
Yesterday I checked my bees for the first time since I moved them from their small "loft" into the "two bedroom" hive. It was a beautiful day and I smoked them just a touch and then started into the hive. I was pleased to see that all the girls were busy and lots of new comb had been drawn out and there was even a fair amount of honey in the brood chamber (the bottom box). There was plenty of brood and eggs, so the queen is doing her job well.
I broke from tradition and didn't paint my hive white, I decided to just paint the front in such a way that it would make me smile and hopefully make the bees happy. The hive is beautiful cypress and I hated to cover it up. After I painted it I put two coats of polyurethane over everything.
Gotta start somewhere!
Well, today is my first blog post. I have decided to phase out our website, so I have started a blog for those that are interested in what is going on at The Rock. I will not be a daily blogger, but I will try and update from time to time.
For those of you that are new to this (like me) you can add comments or questions to each post, so feel free!
Since I would like to keep some of the content on my foresthomeandgarden.com website, I have a blog at http://foresthomeandgarden.blogspot.com/ where I am going to be moving most of that. Eventually.
